CONTRADICTING SIMILARITIES BETWEEN HYPERPROLACTINEMIA AND PCOS.
So today, I have decided to treat this contradicting similarities of these two due to some similar symptoms both have in common. And since I have been diagnosed with both PCOS and HYPERPROLACTINEMIA, I have decided to write about it so as to help someone And while I give a clear explanation on both, I strongly advise a diagnosis after reading this article so as to assertain which u are suffering from.
What is High prolactin level?
Prolactin is one of the several hormones that is produced by a pituitary gland. Causes of high prolactin level are:
1.Prolactinoma: a condition of a Non-cancerous tumor (Adenoma) of the pituitary gland in one's Brain. It is not a life threatening disease but it can impair in someone's Vision, cause infertility and also produce other effects. It is the most common type of hormone producing tumor that can develop in pituitary gland. Prolactin plays different roles in human body hence, it's major role in a woman's body is that it helps in breast milk production and it does prevent OVULATION after a woman gives birth. This simply means that while a woman is still breastfeeding the high prolactin serves to inhibit Ovulation. That is why some women who are still breastfeeding do not get their periods. In normal cases a woman who is not pregnant should have a low prolactin level, so if a woman who is neither pregnant nor breastfeeding develops a High prolactin level it then causes infertility. In Men, it can cause Eractile Dysfunction,
Decreased Body, facial Hair uncommonly Enlarge Breast.
2. Hypothyroidiam: your thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones.
3.Anorexia: an eating disorder drugs that are used to treat depression psychosis and high blood pleasure.
4. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
This is a common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or excess male hormone (androgen) level. The ovaries may develop numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) and fail to regularly produce eggs. The exact cause of PCOS is unknown and early diagnosis and treatment along with weight loss may reduce the risk of long term complications such as type 2 diebetes and heart disease. (read more about PCOS on my ig page @pcos_Tell9ja).
PCOS and HIGH PROLACTIN are very similar and somehow confusing in terms of their symptoms Such as:
No period for 3 months or more or very irregular periods, Hence, Needing the pills or progesterone to force your body to have a period.
Excessive Hair growth (Hirsutism), Hair loss on your head or hair growth on your face. (OH how embarrassing this is to us ladies 🙆♀️).
Infertility :Lack of Ovulation or infrequent Ovulation.
Lack of sex drive,(oh how disappointing to have your sexy underwear intact inside your wardrobe just because of non-existent Sex drive☹️). Or when one manages to have sex it hurts like hell.
More Acne than you have ever experienced. (oh how do I take a beautiful selfie in this horrible looking face😭).
Vagina dryness or Low or no carvical fluids, (oh you feel you are too neat that's why your underwear is super clean?) hell no!
Low Energy (you just wanna continue laying in dat spot for a whole day).
Depression or mood swing that makes you wanna attack anyone who gets close to you.
Most common symptoms of high prolactin level (HYPERPROLACTINEMIA ) is dat of irregular menses and Infertility, that is the Reason most patients of hyperprolactinma contradict their condition to that of PCOS.
So making a definition diagnosis of both is crucial because they are caused by different factors and need to be treated differently so as to provide relief for thier symptoms. Because in some cases women with PCOS also have high prolactin level (which is I have experienced) and there might be some sort of connection between both conditions but no research has been made yet as to their connections.
Originally, PCOS can be diagnosed simply by present symptoms of a woman's appearance. A woman has to have two or more symptoms of PCOS to consider the disorder as a possibility. Also, Blood test can also be conducted to check the several things in the body such as:
*female sex hormones
*prolactin level
*glucose
*thyroid functions and other hormones
*Ultra Sound can also be conducted to determine the present of Overian cysts While High prolactin level can be diagnosed by a Blood test. In all, Diagnosis can safe us the stress of this contradictions.
TREATMENT OF HYPERPROLACTINEMIA
Treatment can be administered according to their sizes if the prolactinoma is less than 1cm, the first option is medications since the tumor is not pressing on other tissues or nerves. Most doctors will avert sur2and then settles with medications such as to return the prolactin level to normal and then the tumor shrinks. There are other several oral medications for prolactin treatment and it is Said to have been successful.
Dopamine Agonists :the Brain chemical that manages the production of prolactin is called dopamine the drugs dopamine agonists is Said to mimic the chemical. Mostly used dopamine agonists drugs are:
Bromocriptine it has been used for many years to treat prolactinoma. It is Said to be very effective in lowering proclatin levels. ( to be taken twice a day). It's appears to be the best choice of Dopamine Agonists for restoring fertility in women who wants to be pregnant. It's does have some side effects such as: dizziness, nausea, and nasal stuffiness, Hence, many of its side effects can be avoided if one takes the medication at bed time or with meal and by starting with a low dose.
Cabergoline this is may be effective for treating prolactinoma for those who are resistant to Bromocriptine and it's much less likely to cause Nausea compared with other Dopamine drugs. For all this reasons Cabergoline is the best choice except for those "Trying to conceive Bromocriprine becomes the first choice for us. And if side effects of both becomes severe surgery becomes the next option.
Interestingly, Diets, Exercise and Nutritional supplements can also help reverse the hormonal Imbalance in HYPERPROLACTINEMIA as well as PCOS. There are foods that can help lower your Prolactin level and they are as follows:
*natural foods that have no preservatives such as, Fruits and vegetables
Dark leaf greens
Whole grains
Nuts🥜🥜 and lugumes
Foods containing vitamin B6 (which was listed in my previous post on ), foods high in zinc such as beans, shell fish, turkey.
Aviod : caffeine, alcohol, white sugar and artificial sweeteners.
Chestberry.
